Introduction to a Biochem Major & Mellophone Player

Hello!
My name is Brenna, and I am a junior Biochem major from just outside of Cedar Rapids, Iowa. This semester you can most likely find me in a lab, singing in OU’s student-led accapella group, and running from one end of campus to the other on the way to marching band rehearsal (I play mellophone in the Pride and love it a lot!). This past summer was a whirlwind of class, concerts, weddings, and a funeral, capped off with the lengthy drive back for band camp. It was a fun time, filled with family and a dash of regret for thinking a four-week summer Biochem course wasn’t a bad idea, but I made it through!.
Though I don’t have any pets, I share an apartment with my roommates Meagan, Kaleigh, and her cat Sushi (see below). Our apartment complex has been tardy on some of the furniture, so the tv stand is a bit bare in the movie department, but what we have is quality: Lord of the Rings, La La Land, Iron Man, and unlimited Netflix access to Shrek, an Academy Award winning cinematic masterpiece. Family-wise I am the eldest of four, all born within five years: my brother Daniel just started college at Arizona State and my sister Erin and other brother Cavan just began their senior and sophomore years of high school back home. It’s hard to believe I’m already starting my fifth semester at OU- summer seemed to go by so quickly, but I’m super excited for football season to start back up here in a few days! Playing in the Pride has been my favorite university experience so far, and I maintain that the sense of school spirit in the stadium on gamedays is something you absolutely can’t find anywhere else.
Some miscellaneous info: my favorite music to listen to doing homework is a Spotify playlist of film scores, and my go-to movies are anything Marvel. Lemon bars are my favorite thing to cook from scratch, and I am a firm believer in Tom Holland being the best Spider-Man. Personally, I don’t think pineapple on pizza is an abomination, and  if I could change one thing about OU I’d add more parking (after finding a way to convey the ridiculousness of asking for $270 dollars for a parking pass when there are no guaranteed spots after 8:30 a.m.)
To conclude, I’m excited for this class this semester: the flexible hours are such a gift when it comes to a harried rehearsal schedule, and the material seems so informative and fun!  I look forward to reading the stories and learning more about Indian mythology this fall.

  1. Hi Brenna! I definitely agree on parking, it's annoying enough trying for 30 minutes just to find a spot even though you paid (or didn't) $270 for a pass. It sounds like you lead a super busy life what with Pride, A Capella, and school! I too am excited for football season to kick-off, and I cannot wait for the FAU game!

  2. Oh, both Pride and acapella: wonderful, Brenna! You can let me know if there are any acapella performances coming up! I always like to include an event in each day's announcements, and the best events are the ones connected with actual students in class. Maybe you will want to use this class as a way to learn about Indian musical traditions; it is such a big part of India both ancient and today. Some people have done music-themed projects for class, like this wonderful Storybook from last year: Devis of the Vedic Age.
And your Sushi is a cutie: the Indian goddess of childbirth, Shashthi, rides on a cat: Shashthi (all the gods have animal vehicles, as you will see when you start exploring the world of Indian religious art). I hope you will have fun with the class!

  3. Hi Brenna! I feel you on an emotional level with OU's parking. I think it is really impressive that you can balance such a difficult major with so many awesome extra-curricular activities. It's great that you're so musically talented. I hope you have a great semester and good luck!

  4. Hi Breanna, I'm Nicole! What was the deciding factor for how you chose OU? Can I meet your cat sushi? Such a precious baby.
I'm sorry to hear about lack of furniture in your suite and would like to also recommend Hulu student which is about 5 bucks a month (I think), they are partnered with spotify if you have an account.. if you don't that's ok too and you can just sign up for Hulu I believe. I'm still impressed that you have any time to partake in binge watching at all since you have a busy schedule! Good luck tomorrow at the game, you'll do fantastic and have a good weekend!

  5. Hi Brenna!
I think it's amazing how you handled to be in a difficult course and still be involved in different activities. It's so cool that you are in a accupella group. I wish I could sing, but I'm not a good singer. Also, I totally agree with you on the whole parking situation at OU. It's absolutely ridiculous. I hope your junior year goes well!

  6. Hi Brenna,

I enjoyed reading your introduction. Very cool that you came all the way from Iowa to attend OU. I could not agree more that the parking on campus is awful. It seems to be significantly worse this year as well. While I disagree with your take on pineapples with pizza, I can respect your taste in movies. Best of luck this semester.

  7. Hi Brenna, that is pretty awesome, you are involved in so many things. I bet being in pride is busy since it is football season. The name Sushi is adorable for a cat haha. Oh, I am with you on that OU’s parking. It is insane how difficult it is to find parking. I remember one day I looked for a spot for an hour.

  8. Hi Brenna, your roommate's cat is adorable and has an excellent name. Does saying their name ever make you hungry? Lord of the Rings is one of my all time favorite movies; watching it give me a strong urge to go outside on an adventure. The mellophone sounds like an awesome instrument. It's cool that you get to spend a lot of time in a lab! I work in a lab and really enjoy it. Good luck this semester! I hope you have a good one.

  9. Hello Brenna! Yeah, biochemistry is not an easy course. I took mine two semesters ago with Dr. Sims and it was tough! However, I am glad you made it through! I also find parking terrible this semester! I have to arrive to campus at like 8 just to find a spot! However, I hope you have a great semester! And keep up the hard work!

  10. Hi Brenna, first off I want to address the pineapple on pizza comment because I literally feel the same way about it. I would not necessarily order a pizza with pineapple on it but I do not necessarily mind it either! Anyways, it is so cool that you are in the band! I remember the first game I felt so bad for the band because of how hot it was!

  11. Hey Brenna!
I used to be in band in high school! But you are totally right on college flies by, I am starting my senior year and it feels like just yesterday I had moved into Walker 11. Although I can not cool them, lemon bars are definitely one of my favorite deserts to eat. And I would for sure add more parking to OU as well. Have a great semester!

  12. Hi Brenna! Marvel is by-far my favorite movies and TV shows. Tom Holland is a spectacular Spiderman and I think Andrew Garfield and Toby Maguire should be proud! Marvel Movie nights at my parents house is a must-have whenever I go home, and my dad and I are always binge watching the TV shows on Netflix!

  13. Hey Brenna! I can relate to having a crazy summer! and it did go by way too quickly! That's awesome that you are in band and so many other things here at OU! I am in ROTC and really appreciated you all playing the army song while we marched and sang on the field! Good luck with the rest of your time at OU and Boomer Sooner!!

  16. Hi Brenna! Sounds like you are super busy! Marching band and an acapella group AND biochemistry. Yikes! I thought about doing choir or acapella here at OU. I did 6 years of choir before college. But, I hope to get back into it one day.

  17. Hey Brenna!
It’s so cool that you play mellophone in the marching band! How are you liking singing in the acapella group? I did choir in high school as well as two year of choir here and really enjoyed it and did a couple acapella pieces through that, but I’ve never sang in an acapella group. Seems like you have a pretty busy semester, so hope it goes well for you!

  18. Hey there Brenna! Thank you for sharing a little piece of who you are with the class. First of all I have to say that I was so happy when I read that you don't think pineapple on pizza is an abomination because it is definitely my favorite pizza topping. It sounds like you have such a busy schedule, so kudos to you for staying positive and still keeping up with things that you enjoy doing. Best of luck the rest of this semester!
